Find Your Flow State - an Interview for SubKit
I did an interview for SubKit discussing Flow Physio + Wellness and female entrepreneurship.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Flow Physio + Wellness is a multidisciplinary clinic that works with recreational athletes along with their lifespan not to fix an injury but to prevent it from happening by giving you the knowledge and tools to keep you in FLOW - in your workouts, in your daily life, and along the aging continuum. We also work with pregnant and postpartum women to help them navigate fitness and pelvic health to optimize this transitional period of their lives.
Tell us about yourself
I started Flow Physio + Wellness because I saw a gap in the physiotherapy field between pelvic health physiotherapy and women's fitness. I wanted to bridge the space between pelvic floor issues and empower women to return to the activities that they love. I also wanted to be able to run a physiotherapy practice my own way - including educational workshops, small group-based physiotherapy for accessibility, and 1:1 quality patient care. I am a lifelong learner and am passionate about sharing my knowledge with my community to help them feel empowered and create self-efficacy in their health and wellness.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In 2021 I gave birth to my daughter Lennon and grew my practice by adding on another practitioner and signing a commercial lease to a larger space. This year I also got certified in teaching Mat Pilates to incorporate into my physiotherapy practice. I am proud of accomplishing all of these huge personal and professional milestones all within the uncertainty of the global pandemic!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest struggles as an entrepreneur is establishing a healthy work and life balance. With a business that I started from nothing, it almost feels like my second 'baby,' and it can become all-consuming if I don't enforce concrete boundaries around work time versus personal time.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Hire a business coach who specializes in your field and hire a business coach or self-development coach who has a totally different background from your field of work. The differing perspective these two coaches can give you will not only create a healthy business model but also save you so much time and energy in the long run of building a business.
Find a hobby or passion completely unrelated to your business. Find an activity where you enter a state of 'flow' (pun very much intended) - where time passes without you even realizing it, and you are completely calm and at peace. This activity can help you fill your cup so you can show up better for your business.
Create concrete boundaries around work and personal life. This can be in your daily schedule, in your communication with others, and in actual physical boundaries of where you work versus where you play in your own home.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I get most of my business inspiration from reading books - a mix of personal development books, biographies, and fiction books. Reading is how I enter my 'flow state' - where I feel totally reset, and my inspiration for my business is restored!
