Muscle Work 101: Massage vs. FST
What massage tools are best?
Choosing a massage tool is a totally personal preference. You want to choose something that you can use to apply pressure comfortably and accurately to the tissue that you’re trying to target. You should be able to apply pressure with the tool while the muscle you’re working is relaxed. If you can’t apply any pressure without flinching from pain, its likely too hard and you should choose something less rigid or wrap the tool in a towel to soften the effect. Some great massage tools are lacrosse balls, foam rollers, and tiger tails.
What are ‘knots’ in a muscle?
Knots in a muscle are a tight, stiff bands of muscle fiber that stick together and cause a “knot” or “speed bump” like feeling. Some caused of knots include stress, poor body mechanics, dehydration, limited muscle recovery, or fatigue.
What is massage therapy?
Massage therapy is the manipulation of muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, and joints to optimize health and function of soft tissues throughout the body.
What are the benefits of massage therapy?
Massage therapy is great for treating muscle tension, chronic pain, stress, posture imbalances, and a variety of musculoskeletal injuries by acting on the muscular and nervous system.
Will I experience muscle soreness after my massage?
Everyone responds differently to massage, so this is a tricky one. Muscle soreness after a massage is common and temporary, however this issue isn’t experienced by everyone. How you feel post-treatment depends on the tissue that we are working on and the severity of the muscular tension or tone.
Do I have to take off all my clothes?
This is probably the number one question I receive! Removal of clothing is completely up to you! Your comfortability is my number one priority, and I will work with you to discuss what your preferences are.
What is fascia?
Fascia is the connective tissue that encompasses all your bones, muscles, organs, and body systems. Think of it as a spider web for your muscles, bones and joints to hang on.
What is Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) and what are the benefits?
FST is a table assisted stretching technique that focuses on the fascia, targeting the joint capsules as well as the muscles surrounding it. It is a pain-free session that can increase range of motion, decrease pain, increase performance, and aid in injury recovery.
